Alpha Notice: Tender is a newly-launched project, and so please expect some data gaps or bugs. We’re hoping for a community-led approach to help refine our database and scoring logic. Read more here.
Our mission to bring transparency and empathy to the meat industry.
Tender is currently in Alpha (v0.16). We are a work in progress. Please expect occasional technical inconsistencies. Our scoring algorithm and facility data are subject to continuous evolution as we refine our mission to bring radical transparency to the industry.
Every industrial meat product carries an oval "Health Mark." This is the facility’s unique fingerprint. To use Tender, you must scan the ID code for Slaughter.
The Tender Score (0–100) is a weighted calculation of facility throughput, automation level, stunning technology, transport reach, and resting policies.
High (70+): Alignment with modern welfare and quality standards.
Moderate (40-69): Standard industrial practices with room for improvement.
Concern (< 40): reliance on high-stress industrial methodologies.
Tender is built on the firm belief that religious slaughter performed without stunning constitutes cruelty to animals. While we do not discriminate against any faith, stunning is a requirement for a high welfare score.
The annual volume of animals processed. Smaller facilities typically allow for slower line speeds and more individual attention per animal, reducing the "factory" pressure that often compromises welfare.
Manual lines rely on human handling, which can be more adaptable to animal behavior. Automated lines use high-speed machinery; while efficient, they can increase animal stress if not perfectly calibrated.
The technology used to ensure immediate unconsciousness. Methods include Captive Bolt, Electrical, or Gas (CO2). Effective stunning is the single most important factor in preventing pain during processing.
Identifies if a facility performs religious slaughter. Tender’s score prioritizes facilities that use pre-cut stunning to ensure the animal is insensible to pain, regardless of religious certification.
Lairage time. Providing animals time to rest after transport allows cortisol (stress hormone) levels to drop, which significantly improves both animal state and final meat quality.
The sourcing reach of the plant. Long-distance transport causes fatigue, dehydration, and fear. Tender rewards "Local" sourcing (shorter journeys) over nationwide hauling.
How the carcass is cooled. "Blast Chilling" is an industrial standard for safety, but slower, controlled chilling is often associated with smaller-scale, craft-focused facilities.
The process of maturing meat. Dry-aging is a traditional, slow process requiring specific environments. It is a hallmark of high-quality, non-commodity meat production.

Every meat product carries an oval Health Mark. To see a welfare score, identify the unique ID specifically for the Slaughter Facility.
Note: 99% of unrecognized codes belong to non-slaughter plants. Tender audits sites where the animal's journey ends.
